Biographie
Helmut Lipsky mène une carrière nationale et internationale comme violoniste et compositeur dans les domaines de la musique classique, du jazz et de la musique actuelle. Il est aussi professeur au Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, à l'Université de Montréal et à l'Université Concordia. Il a écrit de nombreuses trames sonores pour le cinéma (L'Espérance, L'Homme perché), pour la télévision, pour des messages publicitaires, pour des expositions multimédias (Le Port, au Musée de la Pointe-à-Callière), et finalement pour la danse et le théâtre (Crime et châtiment, au Théâtre Denise-Pelletier). Avec ses ensembles musicaux, il a entrepris des tournées à travers le monde et a enregistré de nombreux disques. Il a collaboré avec des artistes connus tels qu'Andreas Vollenweider, Gilles Vigneault, Karen Young et Michel Donato. Il a gagné plusieurs prix prestigieux, dont le premier prix lors du Concours international des radios publiques de langue française. Il a été en nomination deux fois dans la catégorie Meilleur disque à l'ADISQ; pour le Meilleur concert de l'année 2006 par le Conseil québécois de la musique aux prix Opus; et Meilleur violoniste par les Canadian National Jazz Awards, en 2006.


German-born violinist and composer Helmut Lipsky is well versed in a variety of musical styles and idioms. His composition and improvisation cross boundaries between classical and jazz as well as between pop and world music. Lipsky was raised in Switzerland, a student in the United States and has been a resident of Montreal since 1980. He has written music for film, television, radio and multi-media exhibitions. As performer and bandleader, he has been invited to numerous music festivals in Canada and Europe, including The Montreal International Jazz Festival, the Toronto Jazz Festival, The Montreux International Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and has played in the United States at P.S.122 and Studio 54 in New York City.

A former violin student of the renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman and the late Juilliard School professor Ivan Galamian in New York City, he has opened shows of such greats as Stéphane Grappelli and Dave Brubeck. Artistic collaborations include personalities as varied as Québec's Gilles Vigneault and U.S. cellist David Darling. He can be heard on albums of wellknown musicians like Swiss harpist Andreas Vollenweider (Kryptos, on Sony Classic label) and has been invited as soloist on the soundtracks of some of Canada's most famous films, notably for Québec director Denys Arcand. Lipsky has recorded several albums of his own and in collaboration with some of Canada's greatest artists such as Karen Young, Michel Donato and James Gelfand. He won first prize in the international competition Jazz à la carte and his last two CDs were nominated for best jazz and instrumental album at the Felix Awards (l'ADISQ) in Montréal.
